NLP Associate Director, Simon Coop, gave a presentation on setting housing requirements to the RTPI/CIH Housing Network event in Old Colwyn. Drawing upon experience in advising public and private sector clients in over 50 areas on housing strategy issues, he outlined the matters that should be taken into account when considering how many dwellings to provide for in an LDP. This included an explanation of the demographic, housing and economic factors that shape modelling exercises and the policy, capacity and delivery factors that will inform the final selection of a requirement figure.
Although locally set housing targets are not new in Wales, this issue is more important than ever at this time when housing delivery is under pressure despite the continued strength of the underlying drivers of demand. It was encouraging to join planning and housing colleagues to discuss how these issues relate to the local context in North Wales.
