M&S ‘Learning’ Store Opens in Sheffield

May 24, 2011

Marks & Spencer’s Chief Executive Marc Bolland, has proudly opened the retailer’s first ‘Sustainable learning’ store in Sheffield. The new Simply Food store, for which NLP obtained planning permission, forms part of M&S’ sustainable construction programme to trial the use of new technologies in seeking to create zero carbon stores.

One new technology incorporated in the development involves re-using the heat generated by refrigeration equipment to provide heating and hot water in the store. The development also uses sustainable building materials including local reclaimed bricks as well as incorporating a green roof and wall, which is irrigated via a rainwater collection system. These have all contributed to the development achieving a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Marc Bolland, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer said:

We are delighted to be opening M&S’ greenest ever store, providing customers with top quality M&S food and drink products in such a convenient location.
