Targeted at councils but open for all to respond to, CLG is asking what should be removed from its newly published list of LA statutory duties. For planning, it includes all plan-making and development management roles. Another list covers functions relating to Listed Building and Conservation Area Consents and SSSIs etc. CLG is also inviting the views of "anyone who has a bright idea about how to make their neighbourhood a better place to live". The consultation is in the context of the Coalition Government's oft-repeated comment that the planning system is 'broken'.
Margaret Baddeley, NLP Senior Associate Director, comments, "The consultation offers the opportunity for the development industry to give its views, however radical, on removing the most burdensome elements of the planning system altogether - and to introduce new ideas. We welcome this for our clients, especially as it allows the property and planning sectors a role in helping Government create a coordinated planning regime that is based on localism and that is more certain, consistent and clear."
