Post Riot Check-up for Tottenham

January 12, 2012

In August 2011 Tottenham faced substantial social unrest leading to rioting and looting, which was replicated in many urban areas across London and England. Tottenham High Road suffered significant damage to private property and the urban environment.

NLP was appointed by the London Borough of Haringey to undertake retail audits and health checks of Tottenham’s two designated district centres, Seven Sisters and Bruce Grove. Looking at recent changes in retail and town centre vitality, these provided a comparison with the health checks undertaken for Tottenham as part of NLP's Haringey Retail Study in 2008.

Although the riots have left a visible legacy, they do not appear to have substantially impacted upon the long term health, vitality and viability of the area. In fact, the riots have given renewed impetus to further improvements in the role and retail offer of Tottenham.
