Tesco Heralds New Era for Rail Distribution

April 18, 2011

Tesco has announced occupation of its 840,000 sq.ft. rail-linked distribution building at DIRFT, which will be operational this Summer.

The building has been on site for some months following approval of reserved matters, pursuant to the outline planning permission for the expansion of DIRFT obtained by NLP in 2005.

The occupation of this state of the art B8 unit by Tesco will represent a step change in rail use for the transportation of food and other goods through the UK, with substantial positive effects on the carbon footprint of the company's supply chain. Tesco anticipates running between 6-8 daily trains from this national hub building.

NLP Director Justin Gartland commented:

This development is likely to herald a new era in how goods are transported around the UK and affirm the foresighted decision by Daventry District Council in the mid 1990's to support the DIRFT proposal from the outset in order to enable the movement of goods by rail rather than road.
