Economic Cost of Land Use Restrictions around Major Hazard Sites

On behalf of the Health and Safety Executive, NLP undertook an economic research study examining the economic costs associated with restricting development around major hazard sites.

Working alongside Professor Phil Allmendinger of Cambridge University, NLP surveyed local authorities with hazard sites, such as chemical works or gas holdings, and reviewed methodologies (e.g. hedonic pricing and contingent valuation) used in previous studies.

The output of the study was an innovative methodology for assessing the economic impact of changing the safety zones around hazard sites in different locations.
