NLP was commissioned to provide an independent planning appraisal of the potential for redevelopment of a vacant former depot in Gateshead for an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant. The appraisal was to be used to help inform our client's decision by the client about whether to progress with a planning application for an EfW plant on this site or whether to try and identify an alternative site.
The appraisal included consideration of the site in terms of its location, planning policy context and site suitability for an EfW plant. It identified the key planning issues raised by the proposal including the requirement for EIA, availability of alternative sites, public perception of harm, public consultation and the role of the Infrastructure Planning Commission. The appraisal concluded with a summary of the key planning constraints and risks which would result if an EfW planning application was progressed.
