Grange Park Opera, Hampshire

NLP secured planning permissions and listed buildings consents on behalf of Grange Park Opera, initially for a seven year temporary use of The Grange, Winchester for public opera performances and more recently for the construction of a new auditorium. This development is now complete and has been given an RIBA award.

The Grange is a Grade I listed property located within a 650 acre landscaped park (Grade II registered). Originally built as a redbrick four storey building in the mid-seventeenth century, it was subsequently encased in Roman cement to the designs of William Wilkins in 1807 in the manner of a Greek Temple. The Picture Gallery, which is a substantive reconfiguration of an Orangery designed by C.R. Cockerell in 1823, is Grade II listed and was formerly linked to the house via a single storey link designed by Robert Smirke. The latter was demolished in the early 1970s but now been restored as part of the new auditorium works. The site, including the two listed buildings and their immediate settings is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
