NLP was appointed by Studsvik UK Ltd, a leading global nuclear services company, to coordinate the submission of a planning application for a Metals Recycling Facility (MRF) to allow the recycling of metallic low level radioactive waste received from nuclear decommissioning sites within the UK.
NLP’s initial role in this project was to advise on the planning implications of the company’s proposals. This was followed by the preparation and submission of a planning application to Cumbria County Council including the coordination of the Environmental Statement and preparation of a Design and Access Statement.
Through the application submission NLP demonstrated that that the proposals would enable increased levels of recycling of waste materials which is in full accordance with the Government’s strategy for sustainable waste management, support and diversify the local economy, and contribute to establishing the North West as a centre of national and international expertise in the field of safe and sustainable waste management.
Planning consent was granted in July 2007 and the site is now operational.
